Snow and icy roads create a safety hazard for all drivers, including concrete ready mix trucks. With snow and icy weather in the forecast for the morning of the planned American Concrete Institute Field 1 Examination, CRMCA worked with CDOT and Ready Mixed Concrete Company representatives to allow early delivery of concrete needed during performance examinations. The mix used included fly ash and no cement. With the addition of hydro stabilizer, the mix was delivered at about 4:30 pm the evening before examination, whereas delivery is normally the morning of the examination. The mix was placed in wheelbarrows at room temperature overnight. The next morning, the mix had not “set up” and was still usable for the examination. Through quick thinking, hazards were avoided and examinees were able to continue their testing with the proper materials.
