University of Colorado Denver students prepare for the ASCE’s 2017 Concrete Canoe Competition

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) gives student organization members the opportunity to participate in the National Concrete Canoe Competition™. The competition challenges students to design a usable concrete canoe. Students are then scored on four items: design paper, oral presentations, final product, and races. Learn more about the competition on ASCE’s website.

The CRMCA is excited to sponsor the University of Colorado Denver’s team at this year’s competition! Philip Taylor, CU Denver Student and local ASCE Student Chapter Secretary, filled us in on their team’s progress:

“Over the past few months, we have been hard at work testing concrete mixes in our materials lab; building a work table on which to mold our canoe; pre-batching dozens of buckets of concrete; and, finally this past Saturday, pouring our canoe! … In the coming weeks, we will be constructing a travel apparatus (using mattresses, packing peanuts and whatever other cushioning materials we can find), to safely transport our canoe to our competition in Salt Lake City.”

Good luck to the team!!
